현대를 살아가는 우리에게 있어서 역사와 도덕 시간에 배운 위인들의 어떤 저서보다도 진실을 전해주는 다시없는 소중한 작품.

로버트 힐번

1970년 12월 11일 발표한 존 레논의 비틀즈 해체 후 첫 솔로앨범.[1] 줄여서 'Plastic Ono Band'로 부르는 경우도 있으나, 같은 날 아내 오노 요코가 유사한 커버[2]의 전위 앨범인 <Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band>를 발매했기 때문에 구별을 위해서 <John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band>라고 표기해야 정확한 발매명이 된다.

커버를 찍은 곳은 당시 거주지였던 '티튼허스트 파크(Tittenhurst Park)'로, 동거인이었던 배우 대니얼 리히터 [3]가 코닥 인스타매틱 자동카메라로 찍었다고 한다.

비틀즈가 해체로 치닫을 당시, 존 레논은 심적으로 상당히 괴로운 상태에 놓였다. 그런 존에게 정신적인 안식처였던 사람이 오노 요코. 그녀와 가까워질수록 그는 비틀즈와 멀어져만 갔고, 결국 1970년 4월, 끝까지 비틀즈를 이어가려던 폴 매카트니마저 비틀즈 활동을 지속할 의사가 없음을 발표하면서 밴드의 해체가 공식화된다. 사실 존은 이미 1969년 9월 멤버들과 매니저에게 밴드로부터의 이탈을 통보한 상태였다. 다만 Let It Be 음반에 미칠 상업적 악영향 등을 우려하여 폴과 매니저 앨런 클라인이 공식적인 발표를 만류했을 뿐이다.

밴드의 해체를 전후하여 여러 가지 이유로 심적으로 고통받은 존은 '원초적인 외침(Primal Scream)'[4]이라는 치료 요법을 통해 자신의 어린 시절에 대해 성찰하면서 밴드 '비틀즈'의 멤버로서의 명성을 부정하고 자신으로 회귀하려는 노력을 보이게 된다. 본 앨범이 그러한 과정에서 만들어졌으며 이에 따라 자신에 대한 성찰적인 가사가 많이 담겨있다. 이 때문에 비틀즈 시절의 곡들과 달리 1인칭 시점으로 바라본 다큐멘터리라고 볼 수 있다. 가족의 품에 안겨 편안한 분위기를 담은 폴 매카트니의 첫 앨범 McCartney와 대조적으로[5] 비틀즈와 완전히 분리되어 남겨진 존 레논의 실체를 낱낱이 찾아볼 수 있다.

필 스펙터가 프로듀서를 담당했으며, 같은 비틀즈 멤버였던 링고 스타가 앨범의 드럼을 담당했다. 또한 비틀즈 시절 앨범 Revolver의 커버를 제작한 클라우스 부어만 역시 앨범의 베이스를 담당했다.[6]

다음 앨범인 Imagine과 함께 존 레논의 최고 솔로 앨범으로 평가된다.

대한민국 음원 사이트에서는 다운로드가 막혀 스트리밍으로만 이용 가능했으나, 2021년 50주년 기념 'Ultimate Mix'가 나오면서 모두 풀렸다.
